Lighthouse Digest editor Tim Harrison was the keynote
speaker at the recent Avery Point Lighthouse Society fall dinner meeting
and fund raiser in Groton, CT.

The well-attended dinner meeting
at the Shennecossett Yacht Club in Groton, CT focused on the progress that the
Avery Point Lighthouse Society has made in raising public awareness and funds
for the historic structure.

The Avery Point Lighthouse, Groton, CT is the only lighthouse in America
built as a memorial to lighthouse keepers. It is now in a sad state of
deterioration. The Avery Point Lighthouse Society plans to restore and
relight the historic structure.

The Avery Point Lighthouse Society, a
chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, was formed in February
2000 with the goal of saving, restoring and relighting the lighthouse
which is the only lighthouse built in America as a memorial to
lighthouse keepers of yesteryear.

Jim Streeter of the APLS announced at the meeting that West Mystic Wood
Boat Building Company of Mystic, CT has offered to rebuild the lantern
room of the lighthouse as an “in-kind” donation. The old lantern room will
soon be removed.
The group is also gathering signatures on a petition requesting that upon
restoration the lighthouse be again lit as an active aid to navigation.
The group is currently selling personalized bricks for $50.00 each that
will eventually become part of the permanent part of the commemorative
landscaped walkway leading up to the lighthouse.
