Avery Point Lighthouse Society was pleased to provide a tour of Avery Point Lighthouse to approximately 30 members of the Silver Sneakers Elderhostel, led by Gayle Anderson, during their trip called "Lights And Legends: Southern New England Maritime History And Heritage".   Ron & MJ Foster greeted the group, who arrived shortly after 5 PM on June 12, 2006.

The tour started with Ron giving a short history of the property, starting with Morton Plant and the Branford House through the U.S.C.G Training Center days, from 1943 to 1967, to the present day Campus of the University of Connecticut.  The group wanted to know how the restoration of Avery Point Lighthouse came about and they soon learned how a grass roots effort turned into the Avery Point Lighthouse Society, a Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation which has worked tirelessly for six years raising over half a million dollars to save, restore and re-light Avery Point Lighthouse.  Of particular interest was the fact that six lighthouses can be seen while standing at Avery Point Light, three in Connecticut (New London Harbor, New London Ledge and Avery Point) as well as three in New York (Little Gull Island, Race Rock and North Dumpling Island).

Silver Sneakers had just visited Outer Island, one of the Thimbles during a tour of the Thimble Islands just prior to arriving at Avery Point.  Earlier in the day they had visited the Stonington Lighthouse museum.  Their trip also includes both lights on Block Island, Rose Island light off Newport, RI and the Beavertail light in Jamestown, RI.  When the group is not at a lighthouse or on a bus they stayed in Mystic where their visit included Mystic Seaport and various speakers during the evenings.  For more information about Silver Sneakers and future tours contact Gayle Anderson Silver Sneakers / Elderhostel at 508-333-2388.
