Avery Point added to Doomsday List

By Timothy Harrison

We have recently heard that there is some talk about tearing down the old Avery Point Memorial Tower located on the University of Connecticut's Avery Point Campus.

Although originally built as a memorial tower, it was once lit by the U.S. Coast Guard. We have very little historical information on the tower. If any of our readers have background on the tower, or old photos of the Coast Guard base that was once there, please send to Editor, Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 1690, Wells, Maine 04090.

The closeup of this brickwork shows how the tower has deteriorated.  The sign on the tower warns people to stay away because of falling bricks.

The lantern room at Avery Point Light shows lots of works will be needed to restore it.
