Avery Point Lighthouse - APLS

A chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation

AVERY POINT LIGHTHOUSE FALLING APART

Avery point Lighthouse, built in 1943 by the US Coast Guard, is literally falling apart. The balusters (made of pink Italian marble) of the railing surrounding the walkway around the lantern room are falling off.
The balusters were obtained from the gardens of Morton Plant. He first developed the property on which the lighthouse stands for his private estate about 100 years ago. In the last week, one of the 32 balusters fell 24 feet to the cement apron surrounding the lighthouse and broke into several pieces. It is doubtful that it can be repaired. During restoration of the lighthouse, the balusters were to be cleaned and used again. Replacing them was never included in the construction costs.
The beginning of phase 1 restoration needs to start as soon as possible. However, we’re still short $30,000 (of $175,000 for phase 1). The baluster falling off has already caused an increase in the cost of the restoration. Every day that goes by the lighthouse deteriorates a little more and makes it urgent that we get the project going. If you would like to help, donations may be sent to: The Avery Point Lighthouse Society, P.O Box 1552, Groton, CT 06340.
